When I lived in Nashville, Jaime and I used to hit Starbucks for a drink and a catch up! Jaime is signed to Centricity Records and has a degree from Berklee College Of Music. One of her songs, “Hear My Worship,” spent nine weeks at the top of the USA’s Inspo charts. She’s touched thousands of young women as she’s appeared on Point of Grace’s Girls of Grace conferences. Now Jaime has stepped forward and launched her own “Modest is Hottest” conferences for young girls.
She has an infectious passion for life and Jesus. She also loves hot tea, British style, which made us instant friends! I know her heart is SO committed to encouraging and equipping girls and women in worship… so she was an obvious choice to invite onto WIWN.com!
Vicky: “How did your journey as a worship leader and worship songwriter begin?”
Jaime: “I will never forget the first time I was introduced to worship music. What a beautiful day. I was born and raised in the Boston, MA area where there is no such thing has Christian radio stations and the church I grew up in sang very old hymns (which I now love!). Unfortunately I never heard the gospel preached and did not know what it meant to have a real, life giving, personal relationship with Jesus until the end of my junior year of college. I was studying jazz and pop music ( voice/piano) at Berklee College of Music in Boston. My heart and life were forever changed through a bold, gracious friend at college who had recently become a Christian. Experiencing the love of God and the journey of faith with Jesus was all I could think, talk and dream about. Not that the music I was learning, listening to or performing was bad but when my heart changed so did the song of my life. A new Christian friend on campus handed me a cassette tape where she had recorded a few songs she thought I would like. I will never forget hearing Shout To The Lord by Darlene Zschech for that first time. I had NEVER heard music like this before…my spirit literally leapt within..I was sitting in my dorm room crying out/singing along and that was the moment I knew what God was calling me to do. I began to write worship songs and help lead worship for a college service at a local church in town. That is how the journey or writing and leading worship music began for me.”
Vicky: “Did you have female worship leader role models when you were starting out in your ministry in leading and writing?”
Jaime: “Besides Darlene Zschech and the few songs I had on that tape I was given I can honestly say I did not really know that there was an entire worship song movement that was going on within the church. The Lord directed my steps out to Seattle, WA where I began an depth Bible Internship at a great church The City Church. It was there that I began to grow as a worship leader and look up to female worship leaders like Rita Springer along with the Pastors daughter at our church who lead worship. The pastor over the worship Dept. at that time was Pastor Steve Carpenter and I can truly say he is the one I have learned and grown so much under as a worshiper. He taught me how to do more then just play worship songs but what it meant to be a true worshiper of God with my life. He has a real gift of finding way’s to allow a “flow” in worship,,,that is fresh, anointed and more then just songs sets. I learned about writing worship songs mostly from listening to worship CDs from Matt Redman, Delirious, Rita Springer and Paul Baloche.”
Vicky: “What advice do you have for girls and women who lead sung worship or sing on worship teams?”
Jamie: “I think one of the beautiful things about women worship leaders is the sensitivity and unique way God has created us. There seems to be wisdom, discernment and that sensitivity that is just built within most Godly woman in leadership that I have met. I think that is one of our greatest strength as worshipers to be able to tap into that and sense where the Lord is wanting to take that congregation during that worship set. I also think as a female it is in us to come along side and support the main worship leader..after all we are woman…most of us very nurturing. Most woman love to serve and that is a vital role within a worship team. I think some practical suggestions to keep in mind is to watch our appearance. Are we drawing a congregations eye’s off of ourselves and onto the Lord or are we more concerned with what we look like that day, what we are wearing..self- consciousness hinders God consciences. Of course we also want to make sure that the clothing is appropriate and modest, not causing anyone to stumble. I get so excited when I see female worship leaders because for the past few years it has seemed like this has been much more male driven. Ladies..let’s be strong in the grace of the Lord.”
Vicky: “What do you do to have fun?”
Jaime: “When I am not traveling I love to watch movies, find new restaurants, shoe shop, drink hot tea, hang with friends and trying to pick up tennis
“
I wholeheartedly recommend Jaime and her music to you! Her website is JaimeJam.com and you can follow her on Twitter (Twitter.com/JaimeJamgochian). In the interview, she mentioned “Modest Is Hottest” (I love that slogan!!). Jaime is a real forerunner for purity in the way we dress and the way we live. The video below gives more info on that and shares the cool stuff Jaime is doing to encourage and equip girls and women!
